Stream the new Broken Bells album online before its release

Similar to my last post about Frightened Rabbit, Broken Bells‘ album will be out next week, but we can listen to it now on their MySpace.

The super-group duo of James Mercer (The Shins) and Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley) are on the publicity path this week, with updates left and right. But this is clearly the best one.

Listen to all ten songs on their MySpace, this week only! (Till March 9, I’m assuming.)

It’s mellow & funky, two things that don’t usually go together in current music, but for the most part they make it work. I’m not a fan of the communal choruses, wishing Mercer could go at it alone. It definitely makes me yearn for more Shins stuff, though (but their future stuff will sound different anyway after losing members). Burke does some fancy electronic sound arranging. This album kind of feels a bit confused (especially “The Ghost Inside”), but something to enjoy in the moment and not really think about it too much later.

Apparently they tested out their song on a panel of kids, but the video on Spinner isn’t working for me right now. Check & see if it works for you?

If the MySpace stream doesn’t work for you, there’s also a stream up on NPR.
