The Got To Get Got reflect on new album, Sahalee

North of America Offshoot the Got to Get Got Wrap Album One, Already Begin Eyeing Number Two

Halifax-based pop rockers the Got to Get Got released their first full-length album titled Sahalee this past Tuesday (July 14), and front-man Mark Mullane (aka Band Dad) is feeling optimistic. In fact, he’s so optimistic that he’s already thinking about their second record.

“We’ve got a bunch of new songs that we’re going to write on tour,” Mullane, formerly of East coast math rock wizards North of America, said in a recent interview with Exclaim! “Then we have a lot more that are going to be coming soon. We really want to record them pretty much as soon as we get home. I know that I just want to make sure that we record them so we keep the momentum of the band going. This was the most enjoyable record I’ve ever done, so I can’t wait to get back into the studio.”

Mullane credits his band’s newfound cohesiveness to a new Halifax practice space, which they recently moved into after being forced to rehearse in an old factory with 18 other bands.

“It was really hard to even talk about song structures much less hear what the cello was doing,” said Mullane of the band’s old space. “We actually stopped, it was quiet [in the new space] and we could talk to each other and figure out arrangements, so that makes it way more of a band than it was before because it was me dictating things and we would record them in the studio and be like, ‘Oh, wow, so that’s what you play here. That’s great, I’ve never heard that before because there was a metal band screaming in my ear.’”

To focus back on Sahalee, strangely enough the album is named after a golf course outside of Seattle, though one that comes boasting a secret double meaning.

“I heard of that name a long time ago,” said Mullane of the title Sahalee. “I tried to write a song called that many times, and for some reason it never worked out, I mean, how could you ever write a song about a golf course? Even though one of the songs on the record is called ‘Bethpage Black,’ which is a golf course.

“Anyway, I always just thought Sahalee was a really good word and when I had to think about titles for the record, I typed that into Google and I found out it’s a Native American word that means ‘high heavenly ground.’ I thought that had a good ring to it, kind of a double meaning. But I would be lying if it wasn’t first named because it was a golf course.”

Even though Mullane will still fondly look back at his bygone days in the now-defunct North of America, he’s interested in what else he can do now with the Got to Get Got.

“[North of America] never had strings, never had keyboards or anything like that,” he said. “It’s actually kind of a treat to arrange those parts and sort those things out. It’s a new thing for me and it’s really enjoyable to think of many different features. If a string part will play the vocal melody here, the string will play a melody that plays off the vocals or plays off Brad [Lahead]’s guitar part or whatever. That kind of stuff is making me really interested in continuing to play music.”

Here are all the Got to Get Got’s upcoming tour dates:

7/25 Halifax, NS – Gus’ Pub
7/29 Ottawa, ON – Café Dekcuf
7/30 Montreal, QC – Il Motore
8/1 Hamilton, ON – Absinthe
8/5 Windsor, ON – The Phog Lounge

Bent By Elephants gearing up for debut full-length

Montreal’s Bent By Elephants Get Set to Introduce Themselves with Debut Full-Length
7/15/2009 By Jessica Lewis

Montreal-based alt-folk upstarts Bent By Elephants have begun work on their first full-length album, which has a hopeful release date for sometime in November.

The group released a self-titled EP this past spring. Now, they’re taking things a bit slower, applying for grants, the band recently told Exclaim! in an interview, as well as writing together more than they have in the past.

“We’re going to incorporate a lot more of [guitarist] Luke [Fowlie]’s improvised sound and texture,” front-woman Chesley Walsh explained of their developing sound. “We’re doing a lot more vocal harmonies too, which is good so far.”

Recently, Charlotte Cornfield, a student jazz percussionist at Concordia, joined Bent By Elephants as the group’s drummer after Avrum Hollinger departed to focus on a PhD. “She has a very different sound and I think it’s going to add a lot to the new record,” said Walsh of Cornfield.

Walsh admitted that the upcoming album will sound a lot like “Saskatchewan Pool,” from the EP. “That sound is probably going to flavour a lot of what we’re going to lead into,” she said.

Trumpeter Ryan Frizzell went on to say that their “songwriting process is building a song around the guitar on songs Chesley writes and other times we build the songs around what Luke plays on guitar. I think that it will probably be more coming from the acoustic sound that Luke writes, and we’ll build on that.”

Fowlie added, “We each write songs and bring them in, but I think we want to start working on things earlier together, so then it can be more as a band.”

While no firm release date has yet been set for Bent By Elephants’ debut album, you can catch them on these tour dates:

7/30 Montreal, QC – Santropol Roulant (tent by Burnside at McGill)
8/25 Montreal, QC – Sala Rossa (Yellow Door benefit)

Stream the new Dodos album Time To Die right now to hinder the leak

July 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The Dodos

California thoughtful rockers The Dodos are releasing their third album, Time To Die, in North America come September 15 (or digitally July 28) and in the UK on August 31 (digitally July 27).

But you don’t need to worry about these confusing dates right now. Even though that may seem a long time to wait for an anticipated record right now, the Dodos are being quite generous by supplying the album online to listen to for free for a short time.

Unfortunately, this streaming comes from a bad background: it’s a mature response (cough, Jack White, cough) from the band to the fact that the album has leaked. They’re upset, but they know there’s a way to at least lesson the flow of said leak.

If you go to TimeToDie.net, you can see a video statement from the Dodos, listen to the album, and download a free track of “Fables.”

The Dodos recently played what I heard to be a very successful show with Beirut in Toronto at the Phoenix, but they’ll be back in the city on October 17 at Lee’s Palace.  They’ll play Montreal October 16 at La Sala Rossa, and Vancouver October 26 at The Biltmore Cabaret.

Where I will be during North by Northeast

June 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hey fellow music fans – if you’re going to North by Northeast this weekend, let me know which shows you are planning on going to! If you’d like to let me know how the shows went on afterwords and want to put a brief summary up on RoundLetters, that’s cool too, let’s talk.

And if you are at all curious as to where I’ll be this weekend and who I’ll be reviewing, well… this is just your luck!

Thursday: El Mocambo downstairs.
I’ll likely be catching Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, You Say Party! We Say Die! and Green Go. Might get there before that, but we’ll see. Do you have any recommendations on anywhere else good to go before 11 p.m.?

Friday: Jogging between the Whippersnapper Gallery and the Supermarket.
At Whippersnapper I’ll try and catch Spiral Beach and Matt & Kim before I run to Supermarket to catch Parlovr, Bahamas, Paint Movement, and more.

Saturday: I’ll be setting up camp at the Reverb.
I’ll catch Will Currie & the Country French, the Dudes, Said the Whale, Grand Analog and more.

All of my reviews of these shows will be found on ChartAttack.com and here on RoundLetters (as well as on Twitter). Check back soon!

Will you be there too? Let me know, we’ll grab a pint. :)

My own news of the day

June 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hey guys! Today’s been a big day for me.

I am now a contributor for Exclaim! Magazine. This is great news for me, and something I’ve wanted for a really long time. Stick around because I’ll show you all of my upcoming reviews and hopeful future interviews/features. Thanks to everyone who’s supported me and told me I could do it! It means a lot.

I’m currently sifting through the NXNE list of shows to choose from and I feel good about it. But…I have a feeling it’s going to be hard to choose! At the moment I’m looking at the venue C’est What? and all of their lineups look really great. That’s just one venue, all nights! Gah!

What are you guys going to do for NXNE? Have any hot tips I should know about? Let me know by commenting, emailing, or tweeting!

RSS Reads for: May 14-22

May 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

It’s time for RoundLetters’ picks on what made the most interesting headlines and gossip in music news this week.

There’s actually some really interesting ones that aren’t just headlines. Such as Amanda Ashs achievement on CBC Radio 3. She created a radio doc about female musicians, and it’s already sparked incredible interest across Canada. Amanda, you were only there for just over a week, and you’re their most outstanding intern! Congrats.

Another Canadian journalist making light in the music biz is Stuart Berman. With his recent book out, This Book is Broken, he’s making waves throughout the publication outlets and most definitely Broken Social Scene fans. There’s been many articles and interviews, but I think this made-up set list with the National Post is a good one.

North by East West is a new Canadian music blog that’s rising fast. It’s great to see how fast it’s going, as that’s a pretty hard feat these days. (Tell a blogger bout it!) Ah, share the wealth! ;-) Anyways, here’s their comprehensive list on the just released Hillside Festival performences.

Okay, probably the most hilarious news of the week is my last bit of Canadian information: ol’ Jimmy Brooks from Degrassi: The Next Generation is really in for it with the vulnerable pop princess Rihanna. I think all of Canada is rooting for Drake on this one.

Alright, moving right along to the states is this bit of indie-lush news: a member each of Syracuse-based Ra Ra Riot and Boston-based Vampire Weekend are joining forces for a great Discovery. This sounds pretty exciting, and it will inevitably gain a lot of popularity within the next few weeks.

My last bit of American news is good and bad at the same time. If you haven’t heard of everything that’s going on with The Shins at the moment, let’s recap. They’ve moved from Sub Pop to James Mercer’s own label, Mercer then dropped two of his band mates for more famous ones, and now what’s a lonely musician to do? Start a taco stand in Portland, Ore. Hey, at least he’s no Marty Crandall.

Moving over to the East, we’ll find yesterday’s news of Jens Lenkman releasing new summer material on his website and today’s hilarity but scarity of Paul McCartney’s freak out over Google Streetview near his Abbey Road home.

Questions, mistake-finds or want to send me a virtual pat on the back? Just email Jess at roundletters@gmail.com. And you can always also follow her on Twitter, @comfortinwords.
